What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight is a rough target weight for your height, used as a general guide. Several formulas exist, so this tool shows a range rather than a single number — real healthy weight varies by build, age and body composition.

How it's calculated

Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) and adds a set amount per inch above that. Example: a man 5 ft 10 in tall gets roughly 70–75 kg depending on the formula (Devine 73.0 kg, Hamwi 75.0 kg).

How to use

Choose metric or imperial, pick sex and enter your height. The tool shows four ideal-weight estimates side by side so you can see the range.

Treat the numbers as a guideline. They use only height and sex, so build, age and body composition still matter.

Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is best?+

There is no single best one; Devine is the most widely used, so comparing all four gives a sensible range.

Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?+

Not exactly. It is a rough guide; BMI and body composition give a fuller picture of a healthy weight.

Why do the formulas give different numbers?+

Each was derived from different data and assumptions, so they weight height slightly differently.

Does ideal weight depend on age?+

These formulas use only height and sex; age and muscle mass also matter, so treat the result as a guideline.
