What is a mulch calculator?

A mulch calculator works out how much mulch you need to cover a garden bed at a chosen depth. You enter the length and width of the area and how deep you want the mulch, and it returns the volume in cubic yards and cubic feet, plus the number of standard 2 cubic foot bags. Mulch is sold both in bags and in bulk by the cubic yard, so seeing both numbers helps you pick the cheaper option for your project.

How it's calculated

Mulch is a volume, so the formula is simply area times depth. First the depth in inches is changed to feet by dividing by 12. Then: volume (cubic feet) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft). To get cubic yards, divide the cubic feet by 27, because there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. To get the number of bags, divide the cubic feet by the bag size — a standard bag holds 2 cubic feet — and round up, since you can only buy whole bags.

Example

For a bed that is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide, mulched 3 inches deep: depth in feet is 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. Volume is 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet, which is 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. In 2 cubic foot bags that is 50 ÷ 2 = 25 bags. Above roughly three cubic yards, buying in bulk is usually cheaper than bags.

How to use

Pick imperial (feet, inches) or metric (meters, centimeters). Enter the bed's length and width and the mulch depth. The result shows cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic meters, and the number of standard 2 cubic foot bags rounded up.

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need?+

Measure the length and width of your bed and decide on a depth — 2 to 3 inches is typical. Multiply length × width × depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. The calculator does this for you and also shows the number of bags.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?+

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Standard bags hold 2 cubic feet, so a cubic yard equals 13.5 bags. If your store sells 3 cubic foot bags, a cubic yard is 9 bags.

How deep should mulch be?+

For most garden beds, 2 to 3 inches is enough. Use 3 to 4 inches where you want stronger weed suppression and moisture retention. Avoid piling mulch against plant stems or tree trunks.

How much does a cubic yard of mulch cover?+

One cubic yard covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 square feet at 3 inches, and 81 square feet at 4 inches. Deeper mulch covers less area.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?+

Exactly 27. A cubic yard is 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet.

Is bagged or bulk mulch cheaper?+

Bagged mulch is convenient for small jobs, but bulk mulch sold by the cubic yard is usually cheaper per unit once you need more than about three cubic yards. Compare the price per cubic foot to decide.

How much area does a 2 cubic foot bag of mulch cover?+

A 2 cubic foot bag covers about 12 square feet at 2 inches deep, or about 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. Spread it thinner and it covers more area.

How do I convert cubic yards to bags of mulch?+

Multiply the cubic yards by 13.5 for 2 cubic foot bags, or by 9 for 3 cubic foot bags, then round up to whole bags.
