What is a fraction-to-decimal calculator?
This calculator turns a fraction into its decimal form by dividing the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator). Some fractions give a neat, terminating decimal like 0.75; others repeat forever, like 0.3333…. The calculator shows the exact answer — including the repeating part — plus a rounded value you can use in everyday work.
How the conversion works
Converting a fraction to a decimal is just division: numerator ÷ denominator. You divide, bring down zeros, and keep going. If the remainder ever becomes zero, the decimal stops (it terminates). If a remainder starts repeating, the digits repeat too, and the decimal goes on forever in a fixed pattern.
To show repeating decimals clearly, this tool wraps the repeating block in parentheses. So 5/6 is written 0.8(3), meaning 0.8333…, and 2/7 is 0.(285714), meaning the six digits 285714 repeat without end.
Worked example
Take 5/6. Six goes into 5.000… : 6 into 50 is 8 (remainder 2), 6 into 20 is 3 (remainder 2), and now the remainder 2 repeats, so the 3 repeats forever. The result is 0.8333… = 0.8(3). By contrast 1/8 = 0.125 stops cleanly, because its denominator only has 2s as factors.
Terminating or repeating?
A fraction in lowest terms gives a terminating decimal only when its denominator's prime factors are just 2s and 5s (for example 1/8, 3/4, 7/16). Any other prime factor — like the 3 in 1/6 or the 7 in 2/7 — produces a repeating decimal.
