Score needed on the final

101.67%

You'd need more than 100% (extra credit) to reach that target.

What is a final grade calculator?

A final grade calculator tells you the score you need on your final exam to finish the course with the grade you want. Plug in the grade you have now, how much the final is worth, and your target, and it returns the exact percentage you need.

How it's calculated

Your current grade counts for everything except the final, and the final makes up the rest. If the final is worth f (written as a decimal, so 30% is 0.30), your current grade covers the other (1 − f) of the course. The score you need on the final is: Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − f)) / f.

Example

You currently have 85%, the final is worth 30% (f = 0.30), and you want to finish with 90%. Required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) / 0.30 = 30.5 / 0.30 = 101.67%. Because that is above 100%, you'd need extra credit to reach a 90 — a useful reality check before the exam.

How to use

Enter your current overall grade (everything except the final), how much the final is worth as a percentage of your course grade, and the overall grade you want to finish with.

The required score updates as you type. If it's over 100% your target needs extra credit; if it's zero or negative you've already secured the grade.

Frequently asked questions

What score do I need on my final?+

Use Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − final weight)) / final weight. Enter your numbers above and the calculator works it out instantly.

What if the result is over 100%?+

It means your target can't be reached from your current grade and the final's weight alone — you'd need extra credit, or a slightly lower target.

What if the result is zero or negative?+

You've already locked in your target. Even a 0 on the final would leave you at or above your goal.

How do I find my current grade?+

It's your weighted grade on everything except the final. The Grade Calculator can work it out from your scores and their weights.

Where do I find the final's weight?+

Check your syllabus or grading policy — it's the share of your overall grade that the final exam is worth.

Does this work for any big assignment, not just finals?+

Yes. Treat any single upcoming assessment as the 'final': enter its weight and your current grade to see the score you need.
