What is a test grade calculator?

A test grade calculator — sometimes called an EZ grader — turns a raw score into a percentage and a letter grade. Enter how many questions were answered correctly out of the total, and it works out the percentage so teachers can grade quickly and students can check a score in seconds.

How it's calculated

The percentage score is the number correct divided by the total number of questions, times 100: Score = (correct / total) × 100. The letter grade comes from where that percentage lands on the common US plus/minus scale (A 93–100, A- 90–92, and so on down to F below 60).

Example

On a 50-question test with 45 correct: 45 / 50 = 0.9, and 0.9 × 100 = 90%, which is an A- on the common scale. Get 7 out of 10 right and it is 70%, a C-.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a test grade?+

Divide the number correct by the total number of questions and multiply by 100. For 18 out of 20: (18 / 20) × 100 = 90%.

What is an EZ grader?+

It's a quick tool that converts 'number correct out of total' into a percentage and letter grade, so you don't have to do the math by hand for every test.

How are points turned into a letter grade?+

This tool uses the common US plus/minus scale (A 93–100, A- 90–92, B+ 87–89, and so on, with F below 60). Your school may use different cut-offs.

Does every question have to be worth the same?+

This calculator assumes each question counts equally. If questions carry different point values, use the weighted Grade Calculator instead.

Can I use any number of questions?+

Yes, any total works. Turn on the grading chart to see the percentage for every possible score on a test of that size.
