What is a fuel cost calculator?

A fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel a trip will use and what it will cost, based on the distance, your vehicle's fuel economy and the fuel price.

How it works

In US units it divides the distance by miles per gallon to get gallons, then multiplies by the price per gallon. In metric it uses litres per 100 km. Example: a 300-mile trip at 30 mpg with fuel at 3.50 uses 10 gallons and costs 35.00.

All calculations happen in your browser. Nothing is sent, stored, or tracked.

Results are estimates and may contain errors — for general information only, not professional advice. Always verify before relying on them. Disclaimer

How to use

Choose US or metric units, then enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel economy, and the fuel price. The calculator shows the fuel needed and total cost instantly.

All values are rounded to two decimal places. The tool is currency-neutral.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?+

Divide the distance by your fuel economy to get the fuel used, then multiply by the price per unit.

What is the difference between mpg and L/100km?+

mpg is distance per fuel (higher is better); L/100km is fuel per distance (lower is better).

How can I lower my fuel cost?+

Drive smoothly, keep tyres properly inflated, reduce extra weight, and combine trips to improve economy.

Does this include tolls or wear?+

No - it estimates fuel only, not tolls, parking or vehicle wear.
